Middletown has water in every direction — Crystal Lake, Pameacha Pond, and the river itself. Which means a great many local boots have carried a tackle box, a net and a cool bag that was not quite sealed.
Fish odour is the hardest routine smell in this trade, and it is worth understanding why.
Why this smell behaves differently
Most car smells are the compound itself sitting there — spilled coffee smells of coffee. Fish odour is different: it is produced by bacteria breaking down protein, and it keeps being produced as long as there is protein and moisture.
That means the source is generating new odour continuously rather than slowly fading. It also means the smell gets worse in warm weather, because warmth accelerates the process, which is why a boot that seemed fine in October is unbearable the following June.
The compounds involved are also alkaline, and that matters for how you treat it — an ordinary neutral cleaner does very little.
Why air fresheners make it worse
They do not remove anything. They add a second, stronger smell alongside the first, and your nose then has both.
Worse, the tree hanging from the mirror desensitises you specifically. You stop being able to detect the fish smell within a week or two while every passenger detects it immediately. That is the standard sequence and it is why people are genuinely surprised when someone mentions it.
What actually removes it
Find and remove the source first. Usually a few drops that went through the boot carpet into the spare wheel well, or a section of carpet under a tackle box. Lift the boot floor. It is almost always there.
Extraction, with the right chemistry. Hot-water extraction pulls the protein out of the fibre and foam, and an enzyme or acidic treatment breaks down what is bound in place rather than covering it. This is the actual removal step and it is included in our interior detail at $175.
Ozone last, not first. Ozone at $149 oxidises the odour compounds still in the air and in soft surfaces. It is genuinely effective, and it is a finisher — running it while the source is still in the carpet buys you a fortnight.
The order is the whole thing. Ozone before extraction is money wasted.
What we will tell you honestly
If bait liquid has soaked through carpet into the underlay and sat for a season, we may get most of it and not all of it. Foam that has held protein for months sometimes has to be replaced rather than cleaned, and that is an upholstery job.

A sealed plastic tote for anything that has touched bait, and a rubber boot liner. Between them they cost less than one odour treatment and they end the problem permanently.
