Cloudy headlights, and how much light you are actually losing

Unlit roads out toward Durham and Middlefield make this obvious. What causes the yellowing, why polish alone fails, and when it is worth doing.

Drive out of Middletown toward Durham or Middlefield at night and the road stops having streetlights. That is where you find out how good your headlights actually are, and on a car more than about seven years old the answer is often disappointing.

Why they go cloudy

Modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate, not glass. Polycarbonate is tough and light, and it degrades badly in ultraviolet — so from the factory it is coated with a clear UV-blocking layer.

That coating is what fails. It is sacrificial and it wears out, faster on the upper surface of the lens because that is what faces the sun, and faster still on a car that lives outside. Once it has gone, UV reaches bare polycarbonate and the plastic itself starts to oxidise and yellow.

The visible sequence is always the same: clear, then slightly hazy, then a yellow or milky cast, sometimes with the coating visibly flaking in patches.

What it actually costs you

A headlight works by projecting light in a controlled beam. A hazed lens scatters it instead — the bulb is as bright as it ever was, but the light goes in every direction rather than down the road.

The practical effect is less distance ahead of you and more glare thrown up, which is worse in rain and fog. It also, on a badly hazed lens, throws light where the beam pattern was designed not to, which is unhelpful for oncoming drivers.

Why the ten-dollar kit disappoints

The kits work, briefly, and they explain a lot of scepticism about this job.

Sanding and polishing removes the oxidised layer and the lens comes up genuinely clear. But it has also removed whatever remained of the factory UV coating, so bare polycarbonate is now facing the sun with no protection at all. It re-yellows within months, often faster than before, because there is nothing left to slow it.

What makes it last

Removing the oxidation properly, then applying a new UV-resistant coating over the top. The second step is the whole difference between a fix that lasts a season and one that lasts years.

When it is not worth it

If the lens is cracked or has moisture inside it, restoration does nothing for either. Water inside means a failed seal, and that is a replacement.

If the hazing is on the inside surface — which happens on some ageing units — no external work reaches it. The test is to feel the outside: if it feels rough or chalky, it is external and treatable. If it feels smooth and still looks cloudy, the problem is inside.
