If you launch on the Connecticut River, your car does something no other car in this article does: it reverses into the water on purpose, several times a season.
That puts the rear of the vehicle somewhere it was never designed to spend time.
River water is not clean water
It carries silt, organic matter, and whatever is dissolved in it that day. When it dries on a hot rear bumper it does not simply evaporate — it leaves the solids behind as a film, bonded, in a thin even layer.
More importantly it gets into places that road spray does not. Reversing down a ramp submerges the exhaust tip, the rear valance, the tow hitch and the lower bumper, and water pushes up into cavities from below rather than being thrown at them from the front.
Then you drive home and the whole lot dries in place.
The hitch is the bit that suffers
A tow hitch is usually bare or lightly coated steel, and it spends part of its life submerged and the rest exposed. It is the single fastest-corroding thing on a tow vehicle, and rust that starts there transfers stains down the bumper below it every time it rains.
The electrical connector is the same story. Water into a seven-pin socket, left to dry with silt in it, is why trailer lights become intermittent — the fault is usually corrosion in the plug rather than a bulb.
What we do about it
The rear gets a proper decontamination rather than a wash: chemical iron removal to deal with what has bonded, then clay to shear off the film that river water leaves. Both are part of our exterior detail at $145 and our full detail at $275.
The hitch, the valance and the lower bumper get specific attention, because that is where the load actually is and it is the part a general wash skims.
What actually helps between visits
Rinse the back of the car with fresh water the same day, before it dries. This is the single most useful habit for a tow vehicle, and it takes two minutes at home.
Rinse the hitch and pull the connector cover shut. A cheap habit that prevents an annoying fault.
Do not leave a wet trailer against the car. A trailer dripping onto a bumper overnight leaves streaked mineral marks that are far harder to remove than the original film.
The honest limit
Once a hitch has scaled, cleaning it does not restore it. That is a wire-brush-and-paint job or a replacement, and it is cheap. What we can do is stop the rest of the rear of the car being permanently contaminated by it, and get the paint back to smooth so the next season’s silt rinses off instead of bonding.
