Every parent in Westfield, Newfield Heights or anywhere else with a driveway and a school run has the same blind spot, and it is roughly eighteen inches square.
A child seat gets fitted and then stays fitted, because removing and refitting it properly is a job nobody does casually. Underneath it, the upholstery has not seen daylight in two years.
What ends up under there
Crumbs, obviously, and in volume — the gap between the seat base and the upholstery funnels everything downward.
Then liquid. A dropped bottle or a leaking cup does not sit on the surface; it runs down the sides of the child seat base into the seat crease and the base cushion. And because the child seat is clamped tightly over the top, there is no airflow to dry it.
Milk is the specific problem
Milk is the one worth naming, because its behaviour is unlike anything else.
The liquid soaks into the foam and the fats and proteins stay behind when the water evaporates. Bacteria then work on those, and the smell that produces is sour, penetrating, and gets dramatically worse in warm weather.
The timeline is what catches people out. Spilled milk does not smell for several days. By the time it does, the source has been in the foam for a week with a car seat pressed over it, and it is no longer a surface job. That is the single most common odour we are called about in family cars.
The other thing under there
Grit and small hard objects, pressed under a seat base that is torqued down hard. Over a couple of years that abrades the upholstery, and on a leather or vinyl seat it can score it permanently.
It is also worth knowing that anything trapped under a child seat base can affect how well the base sits. That is a safety matter rather than a cleaning one, and it is a good reason to lift it occasionally regardless.
What we do
We remove the child seat, clean and extract the area underneath, and refit it. That add-on is $49 on top of an interior detail at $175 or a full detail at $275.
We charge for it separately for an honest reason: it is real extra time, and pretending otherwise means either padding everyone else’s price or doing it badly.
One thing we will not do is claim to have inspected or certified the fitting. We refit it as it was, to the best of our ability, and we will always tell you to check it yourself before you drive. If you would rather refit it personally, take it out before we arrive and we will do the rest — that is completely fine and quite a few people prefer it.
When it is worth doing
Once a year at minimum, and immediately if anything has been spilled. On milk, same week if you can. The difference between dealing with milk in week one and month three is the difference between a clean and an ozone treatment.
