Most people assume a garage is straightforwardly better for a car in winter. For paint and for UV, it is. For corrosion, it can be actively worse, and it is worth understanding why before you congratulate yourself.
Corrosion needs three things
Metal, an electrolyte, and time — and the rate depends heavily on temperature.
Road salt supplies the electrolyte. Winter supplies the salt continuously. What varies is temperature and how long the car stays wet, and that is where the garage comes in.
What happens when you park a salted car inside
You drive home covered in brine, slush and packed grit. Outside it is well below freezing. You pull into an attached garage that is sitting at perhaps 45 or 50 degrees.
Everything frozen on the car now melts. The salt that was locked in ice becomes an active solution again. That solution runs into the sills, the seams and the arches — where it stays, because a garage has no wind and low air movement, and a car with packed arches takes a very long time to dry.
Then it sits there, wet and salty, at a temperature where corrosion proceeds happily, for twelve hours. Every night.
Left on the driveway at 20 degrees, the same car is frozen. Chemistry more or less stops. Frozen brine is doing very little.
The condensation part
There is a second effect. A cold car brought into a warmer, humid space collects condensation on every surface, including the underside and inside cavities where you cannot see it.
An unheated but enclosed garage can be the worst combination of all — warm enough to melt, humid because the concrete slab holds moisture, and with no airflow to dry anything.
What actually helps
Rinse before you put it away, at least occasionally. Getting the salt off before the car goes into the warm is the single thing that turns the garage back into an advantage.
Ventilate. Leaving the garage door open for half an hour after parking a wet car lets the moisture out. It sounds fussy and it measurably helps.
Get the cavities flushed properly mid-winter and again in spring. Packed salt in an arch that spends every night at 50 degrees is the worst-case version of this, and rinsing the outside does not touch it. That is our undercarriage flush at $79, or part of a full detail at $275.
What the garage is genuinely good for
Everything above the sills. No UV, no sap, no bird droppings, no dew cycling, no plough spray, no ice scraping. Paint kept in a garage ages far better and that is real.
So the answer is not to stop using it. It is to stop assuming it is doing the whole job — the top of the car is being protected and the bottom of the car is being incubated.
