Glastonbury has space. Long private driveways almost everywhere, set back from the road, with room around the car on all sides.
That sounds like a comfort thing. It is actually a capability thing, and it is worth knowing what it buys you.
Doors fully open
Sounds trivial. It is not.
A great deal of interior work happens at the door shuts, the sill, the seat rails and the outer edge of the seat base — and all of it is reached from outside the car with the door wide open. In a tight parking space the door opens partway, and the work gets done at an angle with a reach.
The same applies to the boot on a hatchback, and to getting seats forward on their rails to reach underneath.
Proper underbody access
Flushing salt and grit out of arches and cavities means working around the whole car with a lance, at the right angle, for long enough to actually break the material up. It needs room on both sides and behind.
On a kerbside job we do what we can from the accessible side. On a driveway we do it properly, which for a Route 2 commuter car in March is the difference that matters. That is our undercarriage flush at $79, or part of a full detail at $275.
Controlled water
Room means run-off can be managed rather than simply released — kept away from a storm drain and off a neighbour’s property. It is the part of this job that a professional operation thinks about and an amateur does not.
Drying without contamination
This is the one nobody expects. A car dried in a tight space next to a road picks up airborne dust from passing traffic while the panels are still wet, and it dries into the surface. Set back on a driveway, the car dries clean.
The same goes for anything applied wet — a sealant curing beside moving traffic is collecting grit while it cures.
What we still need from you
Almost nothing, which is the point. We bring our own water and our own power, so there is no tap and no outlet involved, and you do not need to be home once we have the keys.
What genuinely helps: a car that is not parked under a tree that is actively dropping, and a rough idea of where you would rather water did not run.
The honest bit
None of this is a reason to charge more, and we do not. The price is the same at a kerb in a dense street as it is on a half-acre in Glastonbury — full detail $275, interior $175, exterior $145, one price whatever you drive.
