South Farms is exactly what the name says, and Middletown has field entrances and farm traffic on plenty of its rural roads. The mud that comes off those is not the same stuff you pick up from a wet street.
Clay behaves differently from grit
Road dirt is mostly coarse particles — sand, stone dust, rubber. It sits on the surface, and water floats it off fairly easily.
Agricultural soil around here is much finer and has real clay content. Clay particles are microscopically flat and they bind to each other and to whatever they are on. Wet, it is sticky rather than gritty. Dry, it shrinks and sets hard, gripping the surface underneath as it contracts.
That is why field mud dries into a shell that resists a pressure washer while ordinary road dirt rinses off in seconds. And it is why the standard mistake — waiting for it to dry and then knocking it off — drags a hard shell across paint.
What comes with it
Field soil is not just soil. Depending on the time of year it carries fertiliser residue, and fertiliser is salt in the chemical sense. It attracts moisture and it is corrosive in exactly the way road salt is.
That changes the priority. Mud in an arch is a cosmetic nuisance; mud in an arch with fertiliser in it is a corrosion problem, packed against metal and staying damp. It is the same mechanism as winter salt, in a different season.
Where it packs
The wheel arches, obviously. But also the sills, the underbody crossmembers, and — the one people forget — the radiator and condenser at the front, where it builds up as a mat that reduces cooling airflow.
On a vehicle used regularly on field tracks, the underside is where the actual work is.
The removal order that works
Soak first, always. Plenty of water, low pressure, and time. Let the clay rehydrate and release rather than trying to blast a dry shell off. This is the single most important step and the one people skip.
Then pressure, from underneath. Directed into the arches and cavities for long enough to actually shift the packed material, not a passing spray.
Then wash the paint properly, because everything above is about the underside and the paint still has a film of fine clay on it that needs lifting rather than wiping.

When it matters most
Late autumn. Getting field soil and fertiliser out before the winter salt arrives means the winter starts with clean cavities rather than a head start. Doing it in the spring means the two have spent four months working together.
